History
1962 On the 17th of September 1962 the keel of the Potvis was laid at the Wilton-Fijenoord shipyard, order number 782. This shipyard is located in the town: Schiedam in the Netherlands.
1965 On 12 January the Potvis was launched. Sponsor was Mrs. De Jong-Bartels, spouse of the former Minister of Defence of the Netherlands, Mr.Piet de Jong. 2 November 1965 Hr.Ms. Potvis was commissioned to the service of the Royal Dutch Navy and was assigned call sign PAPO/S804. The first Captain assigned command was J.H.J.M.Lohmeijer. He commanded Hr.Ms.Potvis from 2 November 1965 until 6 May 1966.

1966 On 6 May 1966 R.J.M.Speckens took over the command of Hr.Ms.Potvis until 21 March 1968. Throughout this year several trips were made during which the boat was extensively tested on performance etc. with regard to the period of guarantee.
1967 During 1967 Hr.Ms.Potvis took part in several naval exercises and called on the following ports: Falmouth, Brest, Gibraltar, El Ferrol, Plymouth, Toulon and Barcelona.
1968 On 21 March 1968 C.H.E.Brainich von Brainich-Felt took ove command until 18 July 1968. Took part in naval exercises in the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean. During this time Hr.Ms.Potvis called on the port of: Lisbon. On 18 July Hr.Ms.Potvis returned to the Wilton-Fijenoord shipyard in order to receive a 3rd stage maintanance.

1969 During this year Hr.Ms.Potvis had two commanding officiers. R.den Boeft from 4 January until 21 August and J.S.Tichelman from 21 August until 8 December 1970. On 14 January Hr.Ms.Potvis was re-commissiond. Called on the folowing ports during this year: Portsmouth, Rothesay, Faslane, Inverary, Belfast, Campbeltown, Aberdeen, Stavanger, Invergordon, Loriënt and Tanger.
1970 Takes part in several naval exercises and called on the ports of: Halifax, Boston and Horta. The engineers of Hr.Ms.Potvis whom served in the period from 8 September until 12 November of this year were recommended for their dedication and sound technical skills. 8 December Hr.Ms.Potvis was overhauled at Wilton-Fijenoord for a 4th stage maintenance.
1971 Remained at the Wilton-Fijenoord shipyard during this year.
1972 On 4 January C.W. de Groot was appointed as commanding officer until 2 August1974. On 4 January Hr.Ms.Potvis was re-commissiond. During this year she called at the ports of: Haugesund, Loriënt and Stavanger.

1973 31 January 1973 Hr.Ms.Potvis became tangled in the fishing nets of a French trawler and had to go to Portland to get these nets removed. At Wilton-Fijenoord the SB propeller was replaced. Took part in several naval exercises during this year and called at the ports of: Plymouth, Portland, Rosyth, Egersund, Lisbon, Barcelona and Toulon. On 31 October His Royal Highness Prince Claus of the Netherlands paid a visit to Hr.Ms.Potvis.
1974 Hr.Ms.Potvis took part in several naval exercises and a trip to the West was scheduled during this year. Called on the ports of: Plymouth, Hamilton, Roosevelt Roads, Willemstad, Philipsburg (St. Maarten), San Juan and Norfolk (twice). Due to a technical failure Hr.Ms.Potvis had to dock in Willemstad during her trip to the West. 2 August temporarily de-commissioned in order to receive a 3rd. stage maintenance.

1975 On 3 March J.L.Spoelstra was appointed commanding officer until 31 January 1977. When taking over the command he also re-commissioned Hr.Ms.Potvis. During this year Hr.Ms.Potvis made several trips in the North Sea for training purposes of fresh crewmen. Also during this year a deep-dive (crash dive) was made. Called at the Ports of: Loriënt, Faslane and Plymouth during this time. Near the Bahamas sonar and torpedo trials were performed. She called on the ports of: Ponta Delgada, Hamilton, Fort Lauderdale, Nassau and Freeport.
1976 Took part in several Naval exercises amongst others in FOST. Called on the ports of: Plymouth (twice), Cagliari, Naples, Portsmouth, Falmouth, Douglas and Faslane.
1977 31 January Hr.Ms.Potvis was temporarily de-commissioned in order to receive a 3rd stage maintenance. As new commanding officer G.B.P.Monster was appointed on 29 July 1977 until 27 June 1979 also re-commissioning Hr.Ms.Potvis on this date. Called on the ports of: Faslane, Rothesay, Gosport and Leith.

1978 Hr.Ms.Potvis had a FOST period. During this time she mainly patroled in British territorial waters. Called at the following ports during this time: Portland, Funchal, Rothesay and Faslane. In Faslane the Hr.Ms.Potvis was overhauled for a normal fortnightly maintenance. During the second half of 1978 exercises were undertaken near Norway and in the North Sea. Called on the ports of: Dundee, Brest and Oporto.
1979 Performs short practice runs in the Channel during which time the chief commander of the Dutch submarine force paid a visit. Has another FOST period. During this time, launching exercises were performed near the Hebrides. Called on the following ports: Greenock, Invergordan, Dublin, Portland and Devonport. On 27 July Hr.Ms.Potvis was temporarily de-commissioned for a 3rd stage maintenance and an upgrade of the equipment. This was done by R.D.M. in Rotterdam.
1981 Performs launching exercises in the Norwegian territorial waters. Called on the ports of: Bergen, Haugesund and Stavanger. Als during this year Hr.Ms.Potvis took part in Nato naval exercises. Called at the ports of: Plymouth, Falmouth, New Castle and Faslane where she received a normal fortnightly maintenance.
1982 Hr.Ms.Potvis was refitted with new electrical cells at her homeport Den Helder. Several trips were made in the North Sea for training fresh crewmen. 19 November Hr.Ms.Potvis was temporarily de-commissioned for maintenance at the Dutch Naval Shipyard in Den Helder. The crew was recommended for their perseverance.

1983 R. van Rooijen was appointed as commanding officer on 8 August 1983 until 18 January 1985. On 8 August Hr.Ms.Potvis was re-commissioned. Extensive tests and training trips were undertaken. Called on the ports of: Loriënt, Faslane, Stavanger and Willemshaven.
1984 Near Faslane trips were made in order to train fresh crewmembers. Called on the ports of: Haakonsvern (two times), Bergen, Arendal and Faslane. Following these trips Hr.Ms.Potvis had another FOST period and called on the ports of: Portland, Gosport and Loriënt. Participated in the regular autumn NATO exercises during which time she called on the ports of: Halifax, Norfolk (twice), Willemstad and St.Thomas.
1985 For the period from 18 January 1985 until 14 November 1985, F.M.J.Schellekens was appointed as commanding officer. During this time exercises were held with the Dutch Naval Air Service. Had a FOST period in the Channel. Called on the ports of: Plymouth, Falmouth, Southampton and Portland. On 14 November 1985 Hr.Ms.Potvis was temporarily de-commissioned for a long-term overhaul.

1986 On 31 October 1986 she was re-commissioned by J.A.Wijbrands who was appointed as commanding officer from 31 October 1986 until 28 October 1989. A trim-dive was made near Devil’s Hole.
1987 Near Norway the torpedotubes were gauged. In Loch Fyne noise measurements were taken. During this time Hr.Ms.Potvis paid a visit to the city of Bergen in Norway. During the following FOST period Hr.Ms.Potvis called on the ports of: Portland, Falmouth and Aalburg. During exercises in the Mediterranean she called on the ports of: Cartagena and Malaga.

1988 During the winter, another trip to the Mediterranean was made, during which time she called on the ports of : Gibraltar (twice), Iraklion, Tunis and Portsmouth. Later on exercises were held in Norwegian waters. Called on the port of: Bergen. During autumn a voyage was made via Halifax, Bermuda, New London, Charleston and Frederikstad (St.Croix).
1989 On 25 January Hr.Ms.Potvis was temporarily de-commissioned for her last, long-term, overhaul. Hr.Ms.Potvis was put under command of G.J. van der Zee from 3 November 1989 until 29 September 1991. On taking over command Hr.Ms.Potvis was re-commissioned. Hr.Ms.Potvis left for: Bergen in Norway. During this trip trim-dives and calibrations were made.
1990 Exercises were held in the Norwegian and Scottish waters. The last two weeks of March of this year Hr.Ms.Potvis was placed under the command of Captain Submarine Sea Training. Called on the ports of: Malaga and Iraklion. On 2 November of this year it was the 25th-year jubilee of Hr.Ms.Potvis
1991 On 29 September 1991, J.A.Wijbrands Took over the command until 18 June 1992. Took part in several exercises amongst others "Vendetta". On 6 September 1991, after receipt of a distress-call, Hr.Ms.Potvis was reported as lost. An extensive search was undertaken. Around 2 p.m. Hr.Ms.Potvis surfaced again. On board nobody knew anything about a distress-call or a request to report in. During the following FOST-period she called at the ports of Faslane and Plymouth. Exercises were held in Devil’s Hole.
1992 Exercises in the North Sea and near Norway. Called on the ports of Stavanger (twice) and Bergen. Had another short FOST period during which she called at the ports of Blyth and Dartmouth. On 22 May she arrived at her homeport, Den Helder, from here last voyage. On 18 June 1992 Hr.Ms.Potvis was finally de-commissioned by J.A.Wijbrands. De-commissioning was on the day the Dutch Submarine force existed 85 years.
1993 The Potvis remained in her homeport, Den Helder, throughout this year.

1994 15 July 1994 the Dutch Government sold the Potvis to the demolishing company "Edocoma" in Wilnis the Netherlands for 85555,00 Dutch guilders = 38823,17 Euro.
